How to install a Radiant Extrol Expansion Tank

Prior to installing the expansion tank:

  • As with any expansion tank, survey the tank for any damage. A damaged tank should not be installed and a replacement must be ordered.
  • Calibrate the pre-charge pressure to match the pressure of the system. The default pre-charge pressure will more than likely be 12 PSI.
  • The plastic cap on the air fitting must be changed and tightened before installation.

Installing the RX-15 Radiant Extrol expansion tank:

1. Remove all water from the boiler system and mark off the area where the RX-15 Radiant Extrol expansion tank will be installed.
2. The expansion tank must now be installed on the suction-side of the heat circulator and the supply-side of the water boiler.

Note: The RX-15 and RX-30 Radiant Extrol expansion tanks can be installed suspended on an air purger or an air eliminator. Although these expansion tanks are meant to be installed vertically, they may also be installed horizontally if properly supported. The RX-60 and larger Radiant Extrol expansion tanks must be installed vertically on the ground and piping can be used to connect them to the air purger and float vent.

3. After installing the expansion tank, check for any leaks and make repairs as necessary. The entire system must then be re-pressurized.
4. Start the boiler system and check for relief valve discharge. If, while the system is running, the relief valve drips, the expansion tank may have been incorrectly charged. Another possibility is that the RX-15 Radiant Extrol expansion tank is too small for the system in which case it’s best to purchase a larger sized tank.
5. Your RX-15 Radiant Extrol expansion tank should now be in working order and absorbing any hot expanded water.

Maintenance: A professional heating system specialist should inspect the entire heating system once a year. As the system ages, the professional should check the system more frequently.
