Taco Circulator Pumps - Cast Iron
Cast Iron (CI) Taco circulator pumps are designed for use in closed loop hydronic heating and radiant heating systems. A variety of Taco products includes the famous Taco 007 model, a 3-speed 00r-msf1-ifc circulator used in radiant heating systems, Taco 009-f5 and 0011-f4 models commonly used in installation of outdoor wood stoves, the cross-flange taco 0010 service pump and many more. Some of the models are available with a built-in Integral Flow Check (IFC).
Cast iron Taco circulator pumps should be used with cast iron flanges.
For sizing information, see "How to size a Circulator Pump"
Q: The Taco circulator pump I have cannot keep up with my system requirements. Do i have to buy a new one or can I install another one in line to increase performance.
A: In this situation, to increase flow, manufacturer recommends putting a secondary circulator pump in parallel rather than in series.
Q: I have a Taco 007 circulator. How much water can it pump under normal conditions?
A: The output of any Taco circulator depends on the system resistance (pressure drop), which is usually measured in ft of head. If you refer to the Pump Curve Chart, the curve for Taco 007 model displays the maximum flow output at a given pressure drop. If you know the pressure drop, just match it with the curve and you will receive the maximum flow in Gallons Per Minute (GPM). If you don't know the pressure drop, use pressure drop table supplied by the manufacturer of tubing/pipe (usually available in PSI) and convert the numbers to ft of heat using the following equation: 1 psi = 0.434 ft of head.
Q: Which pump is best for outdoor wood stove installation?
A: The answer would depend on the parameters of the heating system. Taco circulator pump models 009-f5, 0011-f4, 0013-f3 and 0014-f1 are all well suited for such applications. Since majority of heating systems operate at a 20F delta T (difference between supply and return temperatures), 1 gallon of hot water is accounted for approx. 10,000 BTUs. So if you have a 170,000 BTU wood stove and what to use the most out of it, the circulator pump should be able to deliver 17 GPM of water at a given pressure drop. If you're using PEX tubing for supply and return lines, the manufacturer should be able to provide you with the pressure drop table.
Taco circulator pumps are extremely versatile, have low power consumption and feature a field serviceable design, which allows to easily replace a cartridge instead of the whole circulator pump.
When zoning with pumps, consider the 005-f2, 006-f4 and 007-f5 Taco circulator pumps. They are all designed with low head and medium to low flow parameters.
