Insulating PEX Pipe for Plumbing Applications

Is it necessary to insulate PEX pipe?

Although cross-linked polyethylene (PEX pipe) is capable of expanding and contracting to accommodate changing water temperature, it is not burst proof in cold weather. It is, however, freeze-damage resistant and should be installed with the same insulating materials that any other plumbing system would use.

How to insulate PEX Pipe?

The procedure for insulating PEX pipe is no different than insulating a copper pipe.

  1. Cover the PEX pipe with closed cell, non-rigid foam pipe insulation of proper diameter.

  2. Seal the pipe insulation by removing both plastic strips (one on each side) at the same time to expose adhesive. Make sure that the seams are completely sealed.

  3. Tape the end seams of each insulation length with insulating tape to further reduce heat loss through these seams.
