Oxygen Barrier PEX Tubing for Radiant Heating Applications:
Any hydronic or radiant heating project involving the use of PEX tubing has to utilize the Oxygen Barrier PEX (or PEX-AL-PEX tubing). Unlike the typical non-barrier PEX used for plumbing applications, oxygen barrier PEX tubing (a.k.a. O2 PEX, barrier PEX or EVOH PEX) has a layer of oxygen diffusion barrier, which prevents the diffusion of oxygen molecules into the system water. The need for such barrier comes from the fact that majority of all heating systems utilize cast iron parts (i.e. circulators, check valves, air scoops, boiler's heating elements, etc.) which are subject to corrosion if exposed to air (O2) bubbles.
The abbreviation stands for PEX-Aluminum-PEX, which is simply a multi-layer pipe with layer of aluminum sandwiched and bonded in between the two layer of PEX tubing. PEX-AL-PEX tubing, similar to the oxygen barrier PEX, has 100% oxygen barrier, making it usable for all radiant heating and hydrnic heating systems. The added advantages of the PEX-AL-PEX include the ability to keep it's form when bent and a significantly lower expansion ratio, which reduces the noises when pipe is installed between the joists or in subfloor.
