About Water Heater Relief Valves

Pressure relief valves used for hot water heaters and storage tanks can generally be divided into (2) main categories - pressure-only relief valves and t&p (temperature and pressure) relief valves.
The former are generally limited to tankless water heaters and other equipment with built-in overheat protection.
The latter are intended for conventional storage type water heaters, indirect water heaters and hot water storage tanks which require protection both from over-pressure and overheating.
